Astronomers in Ibiza have captured an unusual dark structure crossing Saturn's rings from the Puig des Molins Observatory, recording a fleeting phenomenon known as a “spoke”.

The image was obtained by members of the Agrupació Astronòmica d’Eivissa (AAE) during the early hours of Thursday, September 24, when the observatory's main telescope was directed towards Saturn.

The observatory is owned by Ibiza Town Hall and operated by the AAE.

A temporary structure in Saturn's rings

The dark feature visible in the image is not a permanent mark or physical break in Saturn's rings.

It is a type of transient structure known as a spoke. These features appear as dark or sometimes brighter radial markings across the rings and can develop and disappear over relatively short periods.

NASA has documented spokes through observations by the Voyager spacecraft, the Cassini mission and the Hubble Space Telescope. They can persist for only a few rotations of Saturn's rings before fading.

What causes Saturn's spokes?

Scientists believe the structures are connected to electrical and magnetic processes around Saturn.

The leading explanation is that tiny particles of dust and ice within the rings can become electrically charged and temporarily rise above the main plane of the rings. This can create the characteristic dark structures seen against the brighter ring material.

NASA says the interaction between Saturn's magnetic field and the solar wind may play a role in producing the electrical environment responsible for the phenomenon. However, the precise mechanism behind the spokes is still not completely understood.

The phenomenon is therefore not simply a change in the composition or structure of Saturn's rings. It is a temporary feature produced within the ring system.

A difficult observation from Earth

Spokes are challenging to observe from Earth because they are relatively faint and temporary.

The AAE says the observation from Puig des Molins was possible thanks to favourable atmospheric conditions, with relatively little turbulence, allowing the telescope and planetary camera to resolve the structure.

The resulting photograph shows the dark feature against Saturn's rings.

Saturn is entering a particularly interesting period

The timing is significant because spoke activity varies according to Saturn's seasons.

Saturn's axis is tilted, much like Earth's, but because the planet takes about 29.5 Earth years to orbit the Sun, its seasons last roughly seven years. NASA observations have shown that the number and contrast of spokes vary throughout these seasonal cycles.

NASA has also highlighted new observations of Saturn's spokes during 2026, including an August 2026 Astronomy Picture of the Day showing spokes in the planet's B ring.

Saturn currently offers strong viewing opportunities

Saturn is particularly prominent in the September 2026 night sky, and astronomical guides note that its rings appear unusually narrow from Earth's perspective this month.

The planet remains readily observable with a telescope, although seeing fine details such as spokes requires significantly better conditions and imaging equipment than simply viewing Saturn and its rings.

Ibiza contributes to observations of the night sky

The capture from Puig des Molins highlights the role of Ibiza's astronomical community in observing objects far beyond the island.

While the phenomenon itself is well known to planetary scientists, individual spokes are transient and can be difficult to record from Earth. The Ibiza observation provides a local image of a phenomenon that has also been studied by some of the world's major space missions and observatories.

For anyone looking towards Saturn from Ibiza, the planet's famous rings remain the main attraction. But photographs such as this show that, under the right conditions, there is considerably more to observe within them than the familiar ring structure.
