The historic walls of Dalt Vila provided the setting for an evening of live music as the 38th edition of Eivissa Jazz continued with performances combining soul, funk, gospel, flamenco and jazz.

The second night of the festival brought hundreds of people to the Parc Reina Sofia, where two very different musical projects took to the stage and filled the area around es Portal Nou with music.

Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa Celebrates 10 Years

The evening began with the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa, which was celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Led by Vicent Tur Ramon, the island's 15-member big band performed alongside Gospel Lab, bringing together a large group of local musicians and singers.

The vocal line-up included Aránzazu Fernández, Jordi Sanou, Clàudia Bardagí, Matteo Crocetti, Eslauren and Reya Thomas.

Their set moved through classics from soul, funk, disco and R&B, opening with Heatwave's Boogie Nights and ending with Magnify the Lord.

The Audience Joins In

The combination of the big band and Gospel Lab quickly turned the performance into an energetic part of the evening.

Several members of the audience got up from their seats to follow the choreography, adding a more participatory atmosphere to the concert.

The performance took place close to es Portal Nou, one of the historic entrances through Ibiza's Renaissance-era fortifications.

The setting added another dimension to a concert that brought together contemporary performers and one of Ibiza's most recognisable historic landscapes.

Ibossim Flamenco Returns to Eivissa Jazz

The second performance of the evening marked the return of Ibossim Flamenco to Eivissa Jazz after an absence of 15 years.

The group was led by singer Noemí Escudero and percussionist Pedro Brekón.

For this performance, the group was joined by a number of Cuban musicians, including trumpeter Carlos Sarduy, as well as Alain Ladrón de Guevara, Aarón Puente, Omar Guzmán, Luis González “El Coco” and Marcelo Tumba Latimba.

The result was a fusion of flamenco and Cuban musical influences with jazz, bringing together palmas, tumbaos and cante jondo.

A Tribute to Federico García Lorca

One of the more emotional moments of the evening came with a tribute to Federico García Lorca, marking 90 years since the poet and playwright was assassinated in 1936.

Escudero introduced the tribute before performing El romance de la luna as an encore.

The performance ended with applause beneath the historic walls of Dalt Vila, bringing the second evening of the festival to a close.

From Big Band to Flamenco

The two performances demonstrated the variety at the heart of Eivissa Jazz.

The Big Band Ciutat d'Eivissa and Gospel Lab brought together large-ensemble jazz with soul, funk, disco and R&B, while Ibossim Flamenco explored the meeting point between flamenco, Cuban music and jazz.

Rather than focusing on one particular style, the evening moved between several musical traditions while keeping local musicians and performers at its centre.

The Festival Moves to Baluard de Santa Llúcia

Following the performances at Parc Reina Sofia, Eivissa Jazz is moving to another historic setting within Dalt Vila.

The festival's third evening takes place at the Baluard de Santa Llúcia, continuing the programme with performances from The Illusions, featuring New Zealand saxophonist Nathan Haines as a special guest, and L.A.B. Trio.

Music in One of Ibiza's Most Historic Settings

One of the distinctive features of Eivissa Jazz is its relationship with Ibiza's historic centre.

The festival places live music against the backdrop of the UNESCO-listed fortifications of Dalt Vila, creating an atmosphere that is quite different from Ibiza's better-known summer club scene.

The second night demonstrated that contrast particularly well, bringing together local big-band musicians, gospel singers, flamenco performers and Cuban instrumentalists beneath the centuries-old walls.

For those attending the festival, it offered another way to experience Ibiza's cultural scene beyond its beaches and nightlife.
