The small village of Sant Agustí des Vedrà came alive on August 28 as residents and visitors gathered for one of Ibiza’s most traditional summer celebrations.
The annual Festes de Sant Agustí combine religious traditions, local folklore, music and community activities, offering a glimpse of a different side of the island beyond its famous beaches and nightlife.
A Day Rooted in Ibiza Tradition
The main celebration began with a solemn Mass at the village church, followed by a traditional procession through Sant Agustí.
One of the highlights was ball pagès, Ibiza’s traditional folk dance, performed by dancers wearing traditional island clothing and accompanied by traditional music.
The celebration is held each year on August 28, the feast day of Saint Augustine, and is considered one of the island's cherished end-of-summer festivities.
A Village Celebration
The festivities bring together the local community as well as visitors who come to experience Sant Agustí's more traditional atmosphere.
The village square around the distinctive whitewashed church becomes the centre of the celebrations, with the religious procession and traditional dancing providing a strong connection to Ibiza's rural heritage.
The church itself is particularly distinctive. Built in the early 19th century, it is notable for not having the traditional exterior porch found on many of Ibiza's rural churches.
Music Continues the Celebration
The patron saint's day also marked the beginning of a weekend of live music and cultural activities.
On the evening of August 28, performances included Arredefolk from Formentera, Barcelona's Balkan Paradise Orchestra and The Groggy Dogs from Seville.
The wider Festes de Sant Agustí programme continues beyond the main day, with concerts, family activities, workshops, markets, sports and other cultural events running through September.
