New IES Can Cantó in Ibiza Goes to Tender for €14.46 Million

03 de October de 2026

The new IES Can Cantó secondary school in Ibiza has taken another step forward, with the Balearic Government putting the construction works out to tender with a budget of €14.46 million.

The Conselleria d’Educació i Universitats has launched the tender with a budget of €14,466,420.77 including VAT for the construction of the new secondary school in the municipality of Eivissa.

The project is designed to provide 690 new school places and increase the public secondary education capacity available in Ibiza as demand for places continues to grow.

A New School for 690 Students

The future IES Can Cantó will have capacity for 690 students.

The centre will provide 480 places for Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and 210 places for Bachillerato.

The educational programme will comprise 16 ESO units and six Bachillerato units.

For Bachillerato, the planned options are Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and the General modality.

A 5,561-Square-Metre Educational Complex

The new institute will be built on a municipal plot of more than 11,000 square metres in the es Putxet area of Ibiza.

The total built area of the school is planned at 5,561.40 square metres.

The site has been made available by Ibiza Town Hall to the Balearic Government for the development of the educational project.

The design is organised around two main building volumes, forming an L-shaped complex adapted to the characteristics of the site.

Classrooms, Administration, Gym and Cafeteria

The main block will contain the classrooms and administrative areas and will be distributed across a ground floor and two upper floors.

The second block will house the gymnasium and cafeteria and will be positioned perpendicular to the classroom building.

A covered portico between the two buildings will form the main entrance to the institute.

The classroom building will contain teaching spaces for ESO and Bachillerato alongside specialist areas including laboratories, music rooms, technology classrooms, art and drawing spaces, reinforcement classrooms and a library.

Administrative and staff areas will also be located within the main building.

Outdoor Areas and Sports Facilities

The project includes the development of the outdoor areas surrounding the buildings.

These will include recreational areas, green spaces, school gardens, bicycle parking and sports facilities.

An external vehicle parking area is also planned.

The design has been adapted to the existing topography of the site, with the sports courts positioned slightly below the main ground-floor level.

Construction Expected to Begin in 2027

The construction works have a planned execution period of 22 months.

According to the Balearic Government, the works are expected to begin during the first quarter of 2027 and be completed during the fourth quarter of 2028.

This means the project remains at the procurement stage at present. The publication of the tender does not mean construction has already started.

The Tender Budget

The construction tender has been published with a budget of €14,466,420.77 including VAT.

This figure follows an earlier government authorisation in August 2026 allowing IBISEC, the Balearic Institute for Educational Infrastructure and Services, to process a maximum expenditure of €15,966,712.79 for the tender.

The two figures represent different stages of the process. The €15.97 million figure was the maximum expenditure authorised to enable the procurement process, while €14.47 million is the budget published for the construction tender.

Part of the Educational Infrastructure Plan

The new IES Can Cantó forms part of the Balearic Government's wider Plan for Educational Infrastructure.

The project was approved as a basic and execution project in June 2026, before moving towards the construction tender published in October.

The Government has presented the new institute as a response to the increasing demand for secondary and post-compulsory education places in Ibiza.

More Educational Capacity for Ibiza

Once completed, the new institute will add 690 places to the public education network in the municipality.

The centre's combination of ESO and Bachillerato provision will allow students to continue their education within the same new facility across different stages of secondary education.

The planned infrastructure also includes specialist teaching spaces, sports facilities and outdoor areas designed to support the daily operation of the school.

What Happens Next

The immediate next stage is the tendering process, during which construction companies can submit their offers for the project.

Construction is currently planned to begin in the first quarter of 2027, with completion expected in the final quarter of 2028, subject to the procurement process and subsequent execution of the contract.

When completed, IES Can Cantó will provide a new 690-place public secondary school in Ibiza, adding significant educational capacity to the municipality's school network.
