Formentera Approves 2,600 m² Land Transfer to Expand Guardia Civil Facilities and Build Housing

August 29, 2026

Formentera has taken a step toward expanding accommodation for Guardia Civil personnel on the island after the Consell de Formentera unanimously approved the initial transfer of a 2,607.73-square-metre plot of land to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior.

The land is located in es Brolls, next to the existing Guardia Civil barracks, and is intended to allow the current facilities to be expanded and new housing to be created for officers stationed on Formentera.

Land to Be Transferred Free of Charge

The transfer was approved initially and unanimously during a plenary session of the Consell.

The plot, which is valued at approximately €78,000, was acquired by the Consell after the institution identified the need to make additional land available for Guardia Civil accommodation.

The property is being transferred free of charge to the Ministry of the Interior, with the land intended specifically for the expansion of the Guardia Civil facilities and the construction of accommodation for personnel.

Addressing Housing for Guardia Civil Personnel

The project is particularly relevant to Formentera because providing suitable accommodation for public-sector workers can be challenging on the island.

The plan is intended to create additional housing for Guardia Civil officers who work or may be assigned to Formentera, helping make it easier for personnel to live on the island while serving there.

The proposal was already being developed earlier this year, when the Consell announced plans to transfer the plot to the central government for this purpose.

Next Steps

The approval is currently initial rather than final, meaning the administrative process still has to continue before the land transfer and subsequent development can move forward.

The land's future use is tied to the Guardia Civil project, and the agreement establishes a specific purpose for the property.

The move comes as Formentera continues to face the broader challenge of providing adequate housing and accommodation for workers and public servants on an island where residential availability is particularly limited.

Supporting Essential Services on Formentera

Formentera's small size and limited housing stock make accommodation an important factor in attracting and retaining essential public-sector personnel.

By making land available for Guardia Civil housing, the Consell hopes to strengthen the conditions needed for officers to remain stationed on the island.

The project therefore combines public infrastructure with a housing component, while also expanding the existing Guardia Civil complex.
