Formentera is turning its attention to the world beneath the Mediterranean surface this September with the arrival of “Feim un capfico?”, a travelling marine photography exhibition by MARE.

The exhibition brings 32 award-winning photographs from the sixth edition of MARE FOTO, the Photography Competition for the Conservation of the Balearic Sea, to Sant Francesc Xavier from September 4 to 21.

The exhibition combines underwater photography with stories about marine life, landscapes, people and the pressures affecting the Balearic marine environment.

32 Photographs, One Balearic Sea

“Feim un capfico?” brings together photographs recognised across the different categories of the MARE FOTO competition.

The images explore different aspects of the Balearic marine environment, from underwater landscapes and Mediterranean wildlife to Posidonia seagrass meadows and the relationship between people and the sea.

The collection also includes photographs highlighting some of the pressures and threats affecting marine ecosystems.

The result is an exhibition that combines the visual appeal of underwater photography with an educational element focused on the marine environment.

From Mallorca and Menorca to Formentera

The Formentera exhibition forms part of a wider 2026 travelling programme by MARE.

Before arriving in the Pityusic Islands, the exhibition had already travelled to locations in Mallorca and Menorca.

Formentera is the first Pityusic stop on this year's itinerary, with the exhibition scheduled to continue to Ibiza from September 25 to October 14 after its Formentera run. Further stops are planned in Mallorca later in the year.

A Return to Formentera

This is not MARE's first exhibition on the island.

Formentera also hosted the organisation's travelling exhibition last year, continuing a collaboration between MARE and the Consell Insular de Formentera focused on bringing marine conservation and cultural projects to residents and visitors.

The latest exhibition continues that relationship, using photography as a way of encouraging people to look more closely at the marine environment surrounding the island.

Photography Meets Marine Conservation

MARE uses photography as one of its main tools for connecting audiences with the Balearic Sea.

The images in the exhibition are intended not only to showcase the underwater environment, but also to encourage greater awareness of what exists beneath the surface.

Among the themes represented are marine species, underwater landscapes, Posidonia, protected marine areas and the interaction between people and the sea.

That makes the exhibition particularly relevant in Formentera, where the surrounding marine environment is an important part of the island's identity.

A People's Choice Award

The exhibition also includes “Abraçant el futur” by Sebastià Pons Burguera, which received the MARE Popularis award as the photograph receiving the most votes from the public.

The inclusion of the public-voted image adds another perspective to the collection, alongside photographs recognised by the competition's different categories and awards.

“Feim un capfico?” is being presented in Sant Francesc Xavier from September 4 through September 21, 2026.

The exhibition gives both residents and visitors an opportunity to see some of the most highly recognised marine photography from the latest MARE FOTO competition while learning more about the Balearic marine environment.

Formentera's connection with the sea is usually experienced from above the water, through its beaches, coves and coastline.

This exhibition offers a chance to look in the opposite direction.

Under the surface, the Balearic Sea has an entirely different landscape, and MARE's 32 photographs bring that world into view.
