A growing population of crickets is causing an unusual problem for farmers in Ibiza: the insects are damaging irrigation hoses and tapes while searching for water.

The issue has become increasingly noticeable over the past two or three years, according to Toni Tur, president of the Cooperativa Agrícola de Sant Antoni.

Farmers affected by the problem have been forced to replace their irrigation equipment with thicker hoses and tapes that are more resistant to the insects' bites.

Crickets Are Damaging Irrigation Equipment

The problem is not primarily that the crickets are eating crops.

According to Tur, the more significant issue is the damage they are causing to the plastic hoses and irrigation tapes used in agricultural fields.

The crickets appear to be attracted to the water inside the irrigation lines. They perforate the plastic while seeking moisture, eventually creating leaks large enough to affect the performance of the irrigation system.

When enough holes appear, the irrigation line can no longer deliver water effectively to the crops.

Farmers Are Switching to Thicker Hoses

The damage has forced affected farmers to look for a practical solution.

Instead of continuing to use the lighter irrigation tapes that the crickets can easily perforate, farmers have begun replacing them with thicker alternatives.

The Cooperativa Agrícola de Sant Antoni has even spoken with its suppliers about obtaining thicker irrigation products for its members.

According to the cooperative, the change has helped prevent the crickets from continuing to damage the tubes, even though the insects themselves remain present.

A Problem That Has Grown in Recent Years

Tur says the cricket population has increased significantly over the last two or three years.

He describes the cricket as an exception to what has otherwise been a relatively normal summer for agricultural pests in the area.

Other agricultural concerns have not increased to the same degree, while the cricket population has become particularly noticeable.

The damage is being reported across different farms where the insects have appeared.

Could the Disappearance of Lizards Be Connected?

One of the most interesting aspects of the story is a possible connection with Ibiza's changing ecosystem.

Tur believes the increase in crickets could be related to the progressive disappearance of lizards from parts of Ibiza's countryside.

However, he is careful to point out that this is an observation rather than a scientifically established cause-and-effect relationship.

According to Tur, lizards were once commonly seen around agricultural areas in Sant Antoni, including around irrigation systems.

Now, he says, they have become much less visible, while cricket numbers have increased.

The comparison is particularly noticeable when travelling to Formentera, where lizards remain much more common.

Scientists Have Been Studying the Ecosystem

The possible connection between the decline of Ibiza's lizards and changes in insect populations is part of a wider ecological question.

Research led by biologist Oriol Lapiedra has been examining the effects of the arrival of snakes on Ibiza's native lizard population.

According to Noudiari, Lapiedra's team has been studying these ecological effects in the field since 2021.

The disappearance of an important predator can potentially affect other species further down the food chain, creating what scientists describe as ecological cascade effects.

However, that broader research does not mean that the current increase in crickets can be attributed exclusively to the decline in lizards.

Other Factors May Also Be Involved

Agricultural professionals interviewed about the issue have also pointed to other possible factors.

Bernabé Linero, an agronomist with the Cooperativa de Santa Eulària, has cautioned against attributing the changes to a single cause.

He has pointed to Ibiza's recent weather conditions, including two consecutive years with very little winter, as another factor that could influence insect populations.

This is important because ecological changes are rarely caused by just one factor.

Temperature, rainfall, seasonal conditions, predator populations and other environmental changes can all influence the number and distribution of insects.

The Problem Goes Beyond Irrigation

The damage to irrigation systems is not the only agricultural impact being reported.

Farmers have also observed crickets affecting roots, seedlings and crops such as potatoes.

In Sant Llorenç, farmer and Ecofeixes president Josan Aguiló previously described an increase in common crickets alongside other insects.

In Es Cubells, farmer Marina Cardona reported losing around 1.5 tonnes of potatoes in late 2025, as well as suffering damage to irrigation equipment.

Cardona estimated her total losses at approximately €4,000, while also pointing to unusually warm and humid conditions as another possible contributor to the problem.

Why Irrigation Damage Matters

For farmers, damage to irrigation equipment is more than an inconvenience.

Ibiza's agricultural sector already operates in a climate where water is a valuable resource.

When irrigation lines are perforated, water can escape before reaching the plants, reducing the effectiveness of the system and potentially increasing water consumption.

Replacing damaged equipment also creates an additional cost for farmers.

The move towards thicker irrigation hoses is therefore a practical response to a problem that farmers say has become increasingly difficult to ignore.

An Unexpected Consequence of Ibiza's Changing Ecosystem

The cricket problem illustrates how changes in one part of an ecosystem can have consequences elsewhere.

Ibiza's native lizard population has been affected by the arrival and spread of snakes, while farmers are now reporting changes in insect populations.

Researchers and agricultural professionals are continuing to examine how these different factors interact.

For now, however, it would be premature to say that the loss of lizards is definitively responsible for the cricket increase.

What is clear is that farmers in several parts of Ibiza are experiencing more crickets and, in affected areas, significant damage to irrigation equipment.

A New Challenge for Ibiza's Farmers

The solution being used by farmers is relatively simple: stronger irrigation equipment that can withstand the insects' attempts to reach the water.

But the underlying ecological question is more complicated.

Ibiza's countryside is experiencing changes involving biodiversity, weather conditions, water availability and agricultural practices.

The growing cricket population is another example of how those changes can intersect with everyday farming.

For the island's agricultural sector, the immediate priority is protecting crops and keeping irrigation systems functioning.

At the same time, understanding why cricket numbers have increased so significantly could become increasingly important if the phenomenon continues.

For now, Ibiza's farmers are adapting once again, this time by replacing their irrigation tapes with thicker ones in an effort to keep an unexpected agricultural pest from literally biting into their water supply.
