Formentera has recognised eight of its most emblematic local businesses, celebrating decades of history, family traditions and the generations of shopkeepers who have helped preserve the island’s commercial and cultural identity.

The recognition forms part of the “Emblemàtics de les Illes Balears” initiative, promoted by the Balearic Government to highlight long-established local businesses whose stories are closely connected to the heritage and everyday life of their communities.

Eight Businesses Recognised

The eight Formentera businesses receiving the distinction are:

• Can Forn in Sant Francesc
• Forn Can Jeroni
• Forn Can Manolo
• Forn Sant Ferran
• Llibreria Tur Ferrer in Sant Francesc
• Macramé
• Sa Farinera
• Teixits J. Marí Serra

Together, they represent decades of local history, with several continuing under second- or third-generation family management.

From Traditional Bakeries to Family Shops

Some of the businesses date back more than a century.

Forn Can Jeroni, founded in 1920, has more than 100 years of history making traditional bread, flaó and orelletes.

Can Forn, established in 1958, began as a general grocery shop selling everything from grain to coal, while Forn Can Manolo traces its roots to a stone oven that predates its official opening in 1953.

Forn Sant Ferran has been producing bread since 1964, originally working by hand and using a pinewood-fired oven.

Preserving More Than Businesses

The recognition extends beyond the commercial activity itself.

Llibreria Tur Ferrer, opened in 1960, became Formentera's first bookshop and stationery store and is now run by the third generation of the family.

Macramé began in 1968 as Confecciones Ferrer and became connected to the development of local fashion and the early years of Adlib-inspired clothing, with the family continuing its craft production today.

Meanwhile, Sa Farinera, operating since 1957, was once a grain mill and agricultural supplies shop. The original millstone and the rings once used to tie animals remain preserved at the site.

A Living Part of Formentera's History

Teixits J. Marí Serra, founded in 1953, was Formentera's first shop specialising in fabrics and dressmaking. It also played a role in creating work opportunities for women on the island through embroidery and wool-making commissions.

The eight stories collectively reflect how Formentera changed from a predominantly rural island into the internationally known destination it is today, while many local businesses continued adapting alongside those changes.

The initiative recognises these establishments not only as places to shop, but as keepers of local knowledge, craftsmanship, family histories and everyday traditions.
