Ibiza is set to receive a new “Muro de la Dignidad” — Wall of Dignity — to honour the people who lost their lives in bombing raids on the island during the Spanish Civil War.

The memorial is being promoted by the Balearic Government in cooperation with Ibiza Town Hall, as part of a wider initiative to give the victims a permanent place of remembrance in the communities where the attacks occurred.

26 Victims Documented in Ibiza

A historical study commissioned by the Balearic Government has identified and documented 152 people who died in bombing raids across the Balearic Islands during the Civil War.

The figures are:

• 97 victims in Mallorca
• 29 victims in Menorca
• 26 victims in Ibiza

The research brought together information from different historical, documentary and archival sources, allowing researchers to identify victims and establish locations connected to the bombing raids.

The Government says the aim is to ensure that these people are remembered not only in historical studies and archives, but also through a physical memorial in public space.

Where Will Ibiza’s Memorial Be?

The exact location of the Wall of Dignity in Ibiza has not yet been decided.

The Balearic Government has already sent the necessary information to Ibiza Town Hall so that both administrations can begin working together on the project.

The memorial could eventually be placed somewhere directly connected to the historic bombing raids, or at another location chosen by the municipality that provides appropriate visibility, accessibility and dignity for the memorial.

That means the project is currently at the planning stage rather than being an already completed monument.

Part of a Wider Balearic Memorial Project

Ibiza is not the only municipality included in the initiative.

The Government has contacted the town halls of Artà, Inca, Santa Maria del Camí, Ses Salines, Sóller and Maó, alongside Ibiza, with the aim of developing similar memorials.

The initiative follows the inauguration of the first Wall of Dignity in Palma on July 27, 2026, which created a permanent public tribute to victims of the bombing raids there.

The idea is now being extended to other communities where victims have been documented.

Remembering Ibiza’s Civil War History

The new memorial will add to Ibiza's existing efforts to preserve the memory of people affected by the Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship.

Earlier this year, Ibiza also inaugurated a memorial chapel at Cementeri Vell, designed to preserve the remains recovered through exhumation projects and provide a permanent place for remembrance and mourning.

The Balearic Government's broader democratic-memory programme includes the investigation and identification of victims, exhumations and the preservation of historical records relating to the Civil War and Franco dictatorship.

A Memorial for Future Generations

Nearly nine decades after the Civil War, the new Wall of Dignity is intended to make sure the victims of the bombing raids are not reduced to names and statistics in historical documents.

For Ibiza, the memorial will provide a visible reminder of the 26 lives documented as lost in bombing attacks on the island, while connecting Ibiza's history with a wider Balearic effort to preserve historical memory.

The project will now move forward through cooperation between the Balearic Government and Ibiza Town Hall, with the location and final design still to be determined.
