Ibiza authorities have intensified their summer transport controls, with a single night of inspections resulting in €27,400 in proposed fines involving five vehicles.

The operation was carried out by inspectors from the Consell de Ibiza together with officers from Ibiza Local Police, as part of ongoing efforts to tackle illegal passenger transport and ensure compliance with the island's summer vehicle regulations.

Five Vehicles Reported

According to the latest inspection report, authorities identified five vehicles involved in different alleged violations during the overnight operation.

The cases included:

• One VTC vehicle reported for illegally picking up customers directly from the street. VTC services are required to operate through prior booking rather than actively seeking passengers in public areas.
• One vehicle allegedly providing passenger transport without the required administrative licence, described by authorities as an illegal or “pirate” transport service.
• Three vehicles reported for breaching Ibiza's regulations governing the entry and circulation of vehicles on the island.

Together, the proposed sanctions amount to €27,400.

The inspections form part of the island's wider summer enforcement campaign targeting transport-sector violations, unfair competition and breaches of vehicle regulations.

The Consell has been increasing controls during the busiest months of the tourism season, when demand for taxis, VTC services and other forms of passenger transport rises significantly.

The latest operation follows other recent enforcement measures relating to Ibiza's vehicle-entry restrictions. On August 27, the Consell announced that it had opened 10 sanctioning proceedings against private vehicles for allegedly breaching the island's vehicle limitation law.

Why VTC and Illegal Transport Are Being Targeted

Ibiza's transport network faces particularly high demand during the summer, when millions of visitors arrive on the island and the number of journeys increases sharply.

Authorities are therefore paying particular attention to vehicles operating outside the legal framework, including unlicensed passenger transport and VTC drivers who allegedly attempt to pick up customers without the required prior booking.

The controls are also intended to protect the island's licensed taxi sector from competition from operators who do not comply with the same regulatory requirements.

More Controls Expected

The Consell and Ibiza Local Police say joint inspections will continue throughout the summer.

The latest operation was carried out during the night, highlighting the focus on the periods when demand for transport is particularly high.

Insular Transport Director Roberto Algaba praised the inspectors and police officers involved, saying their work continues “day and night.”

For visitors to Ibiza, the operation is another reminder to use licensed and properly authorised transport services, particularly when travelling between the airport, hotels, beaches and nightlife areas.

The €27,400 figure represents proposed sanctions resulting from the inspection operation, rather than fines that have necessarily already been paid.

As Ibiza continues its busy summer season, authorities are expected to maintain transport checks across the island.
