Formentera Hospital Launches New Solar Installation Expected to Save €30,000 a Year

October 06, 2026

Formentera Hospital has officially opened a new photovoltaic installation covering part of its car park, a project expected to generate more than 150 MWh of renewable electricity each year and save the hospital close to €30,000 annually on its electricity bill.

The installation was inaugurated on Monday, October 5, by the Balearic Government’s Minister for Enterprise, Self-Employment and Energy, Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro, together with representatives from the Balearic Energy Institute, Formentera Council and the hospital.

The new solar system is designed for self-consumption and will supply electricity directly to the hospital.

Solar Panels Covering the Hospital Car Park

The new photovoltaic installation is located in the hospital’s parking area.

According to the Balearic Government, the panels will generate more than 150 MWh of electricity per year and cover approximately 20% of the hospital’s total electricity demand.

The installation will also provide shade over the parking area, creating an additional practical benefit for patients, visitors and healthcare workers.

The Government says the project will reduce the amount of electricity the hospital needs to purchase from the grid.

An Expansion of Existing Solar Capacity

The new installation does not replace the hospital’s existing solar system.

The previous photovoltaic installation already generated approximately 55 MWh of electricity per year.

With the new panels added, total solar production at Formentera Hospital is expected to exceed 205 MWh annually.

The combined system operates under an individual self-consumption model and serves the hospital itself.

Expected Annual Saving of Around €30,000

The Balearic Government estimates that the new installation will reduce the hospital’s electricity bill by close to €30,000 each year.

The figure is an expected annual saving rather than money already saved, as the installation has only just been inaugurated.

The reduction in electricity purchased from the grid will allow the hospital to cover a larger proportion of its energy requirements through locally generated renewable power.

Part of a Wider Public Solar Programme

The Formentera project forms part of a wider programme being developed by the Balearic Energy Institute to install photovoltaic systems on the roofs and parking areas of public buildings.

The programme aims to make greater use of existing public spaces for renewable energy generation while reducing electricity costs for public facilities.

Other projects are being developed or have already been completed at public facilities across the Balearic Islands, including the Hospital de Inca, the IB3 headquarters and IES Marratxí.

More Renewable Energy for Formentera

The expansion represents another step in the use of renewable energy at Formentera Hospital.

With more than 205 MWh of expected annual photovoltaic production across its combined installations, the hospital will be able to meet a significant part of its electricity needs through solar power.

The project also makes use of an area that already serves an essential purpose, transforming the hospital car park into both a parking facility and a site for renewable energy generation.

For patients and staff, the new structure brings two immediate benefits: additional shade in the parking area and a greater contribution from solar energy to the hospital's electricity supply.

For the public healthcare system, the expected reduction of close to €30,000 in annual electricity costs could also help reduce the hospital's ongoing energy expenditure while supporting the wider transition towards renewable energy.
