Balearic Left-Wing Coalition Reaches Agreement Without Podemos as Election Deadline Nears

October 16, 2026

Ara Més, Sumar and Esquerra Unida have agreed to run together for Congress on 29 November, but Podemos remains outside the pact for now as negotiations continue ahead of the deadline to register electoral coalitions.

Efforts to unite the left-wing parties in the Balearic Islands ahead of Spain’s general election have produced a preliminary breakthrough, although the goal of bringing all the region’s progressive forces onto a single list has not yet been achieved.

Ara Més, Sumar and Esquerra Unida have reached an agreement to stand together for the Congress of Deputies election on 29 November 2026. The agreement was approved by MÉS per Mallorca’s assembly on Thursday, 15 October, with 89% of the 110 members who attended voting in favour. The bases of Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa also backed the agreement.

The coalition, which brings together the regional federation Ara Més and the two parties associated with the Frente Amplio, is moving forward without Podemos for the time being.

Disagreement Over Representation Delayed the Deal

Negotiations had been stalled by disagreements over how the parties would share representation if the coalition won a seat in Congress.

According to reports on the negotiations, Podemos had sought the second position on the list and proposed that the seat rotate between Podemos and the regionalist parties, with each holding it for two years if the coalition secured representation.

Ara Més representatives resisted that arrangement, maintaining that the leading candidate should come from the federation, which includes MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa.

The dispute reflected a wider disagreement over how to balance cooperation between national parties and the political identity and priorities of the Balearic Islands.

Ara Més has argued for an agreement shaped around the islands’ own political circumstances, rather than a structure determined primarily by national party organisations.

Podemos Still Has an Opportunity to Join

Although Podemos was not part of the agreement announced on Thursday, Ara Més has left the door open to its participation.

Carme Gomila, coordinator of Ara Més, explained the negotiations to party members and encouraged Podemos to join the coalition before the registration deadline.

One possible route to an agreement would involve Podemos joining the Frente Amplio at national level, potentially allowing the parties to resolve their differences over the Balearic candidacy.

However, as of Friday, 16 October, no final agreement including Podemos had been announced in the reports reviewed. The possibility of a single list representing all the progressive parties therefore remained unresolved.

Separate Agreement for the Senate

Alongside the agreement for Congress, MÉS per Mallorca’s assembly also approved a separate arrangement with the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB) concerning the Senate election.

The parties are seeking to coordinate their candidacies for the upper chamber, where senators are elected through an open-list voting system.

The aim is to improve the left’s chances of winning representation, although the final candidates and arrangements still require confirmation.

Coalition Registration Deadline Is 16 October

The parties face a deadline of midnight on Friday, 16 October, to notify the electoral authorities of their coalitions for the general election.

The agreement between Ara Més, Sumar and Esquerra Unida marks a significant step towards a joint candidacy, but it does not yet amount to a unified list including every party to the left of the PSIB.

With the election scheduled for 29 November, the remaining negotiations will determine whether Podemos joins the coalition or whether the left-wing vote in the Balearic Islands is represented by more than one candidacy.

For Ibiza, the outcome matters because Ara Eivissa is part of the Ara Més federation and is involved in the negotiations over how the islands will be represented in the next Congress.
