Ibiza’s €785,785 Public Escalators Remain Out of Service as Council Points to Endesa

October 16, 2026

The three escalator sections installed in Puig des Molins on 15 September remain unused, with electrical connection tests still pending and no confirmed date for opening to the public.

Ibiza Town’s first public escalators remain out of service more than a month after their installation in Puig des Molins. The Town Council says the construction work is complete and that the remaining step involves electrical connection tests linked to Endesa, but a date for the escalators to begin operating has yet to be announced.

The infrastructure was installed on 15 September 2026 along Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez, in an area with a steep incline connecting towards Calle Arxiduc Lluís Salvador. The project aims to make this route easier to navigate for residents and visitors, particularly older people and those who find the climb difficult.

Why Are the Escalators Still Not Working?

According to the Town Council, the civil engineering work has been completed and the project is now awaiting electrical connection tests. However, Endesa has declined to provide details about the specific project, citing customer data protection, and has referred enquiries to the project promoter.

The issue was already apparent when the escalators were installed in September. At that time, a representative of the construction company explained that the installation's electrical panels would be prepared, but that sufficient electrical power was still needed to operate the equipment. A connection from a transformer to the new installation was also identified as necessary.

During the installation, the council's third deputy mayor and councillor for Public Works and Roads, Blanca Hernández, said the infrastructure was expected to become operational within a few weeks.

More than a month later, the escalators remain inactive. No definitive timetable for the outstanding work or public opening has been confirmed.

Where Are the New Escalators Located?

The three sections are situated in Puig des Molins, between Calle Juan Ramón Jiménez and Calle Arxiduc Lluís Salvador. They are designed to overcome the steep slope in this part of Ibiza Town and improve pedestrian access between the area around the Puig des Molins Monographic Museum and the direction of Figueretes beach.

The project responds to a neighbourhood request dating back to 2018. Its intended beneficiaries include local residents, older people and visitors who currently have to negotiate the steep route on foot.

The delay is particularly relevant for people with reduced mobility, for whom the escalators were intended to make this part of the town easier to access.

A €785,785 Project Funded Through the Sustainable Tourism Tax

The contract was awarded to Vilor Infraestructuras S.L. for €785,785, with funding from the Balearic Government's Sustainable Tourism Tax, known as the ITS.

The project involved more than installing the mechanical steps. Works included modifications to existing utility networks, including drainage, water supply and public lighting. A new conventional staircase with stone finishes was also included in the plans.

Given the site's proximity to the Puig des Molins archaeological area, the works required consideration of the surrounding historic environment.

The installation is intended to improve accessibility while maintaining the character of the area.

No Confirmed Opening Date

As of 15 October 2026, the escalators had not entered service and no public opening date had been announced.

The Town Council identifies the electrical connection and associated tests as the outstanding issue. However, Endesa has not confirmed the precise reason for the delay, and the available information does not establish whether any additional technical or administrative issues remain.

Until the necessary work is completed and the installation can be brought into operation, residents and visitors will continue to use the existing pedestrian route.

The project is intended to provide a practical improvement to accessibility in Puig des Molins, but its benefits will not be realised until the escalators are ready for public use.
