Ibiza’s Fira de la Sal Goes Ahead in Sant Jordi Despite Weekend Rain Forecast

October 16, 2026

The 10th edition of Ibiza’s Salt Fair opens on Friday, 16 October, with covered marquees installed in Sant Jordi and a programme celebrating the island’s salt-making heritage, traditional food and local culture.

The Fira de la Sal is set to begin in Sant Jordi on Friday, 16 October, despite forecasts of unsettled and rainy weather across Ibiza over the weekend.

The event, now in its tenth edition, is organised by Sant Josep Town Council and celebrates the island’s historic relationship with salt production, particularly at the Ses Salines salt flats. The programme runs from 16 to 18 October, with activities planned in Sant Jordi and the Natural Park of Ses Salines.

To help accommodate the opening activities, two large marquees have been installed in Sant Jordi: one in the village square and another in the square beside the church.

The organisers are proceeding with the opening programme, although weather conditions could affect individual outdoor activities.

Friday’s Opening Programme in Sant Jordi

The first day combines activities for older residents with a live radio recording and a discussion about the history and present-day importance of salt production.

From 09:00 to 15:00, the programme includes an activity for older residents of the municipality, requiring prior registration through Social Services.

At 17:00, the live recording of Onda Agraria, the agricultural programme broadcast by Onda Cero, will take place in Sant Jordi’s multipurpose hall. Public attendance is possible, subject to limited capacity.

The opening day continues at 18:30 with Sal de la tierra y sal del mar (Salt of the Earth and Salt of the Sea), a mini-congress held in the square beside Sant Jordi Church.

Historian Antoni Ferrer Abárzuza will lead the discussion, which will explore the past and present of the island’s salt industry. Participants include Andreu Galera, director of the Historical Archive of Cardona, and salt worker José Miguel Marí of Salinera Española.

Cardona is the guest municipality for this year’s edition.

A Weekend Celebrating Ibiza’s Salt-Making Heritage

The wider programme explores the traditions, working practices and cultural legacy associated with Ses Salines, an area that has played an important role in Ibiza’s history.

Activities announced for the weekend include demonstrations of traditional manual salt harvesting, an artisan market, workshops, local food experiences and traditional Ibizan folk dancing.

Visitors can also discover the area’s natural environment through activities connected with the conservation of Ses Salines. The programme includes theatrical visits to the Torre de la Sal Rossa, bringing the history of the salt industry and its surroundings to life.

Family activities include the Escola de Petits Saliners, introducing younger visitors to the island’s salt-making traditions through educational and practical experiences.

The Salipinta drawing competition is also part of the programme, alongside cultural activities designed to connect residents and visitors with the island’s heritage.

Weather Forecast Raises Questions About Outdoor Activities

The decision to proceed comes despite forecasts of rain throughout the weekend.

The marquees in Sant Jordi provide covered spaces for some of the scheduled activities, but their installation does not guarantee that every outdoor event will take place exactly as planned.

Visitors are advised to check for any updates from the organisers before travelling to individual activities, particularly those taking place in the open air or within the natural park.
