Schools Suspended Across Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca on Monday as Storm Adam Raises Flood Risk

October 19, 2026

Schools and educational activities across Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca were suspended on Monday, 19 October 2026, following a decision by the Balearic Government in response to the risk of further heavy rainfall and flooding associated with Storm Adam.

The measure was announced on Sunday, 18 October, by the regional Ministry of Education and Universities, following recommendations from the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior and forecasts from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The decision was intended to protect pupils, teachers and other members of the educational community while reducing unnecessary travel during a period of severe weather and widespread flooding.

Which Islands Are Affected?

The suspension applies to all educational centres in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera, including in-person classes and other scheduled educational activities for Monday.

Menorca was excluded from the measure, with educational activity due to continue normally according to the weather forecasts available when the decision was announced.

The regional government informed school management teams and communicated the decision to families and pupils through the GESTIB educational platform and text messages.

Families were advised to monitor communications from their individual schools in case of further updates.

Why Were Classes Suspended?

The decision followed intense rainfall and flooding across the Balearic Islands during the passage of Storm Adam. Emergency authorities warned of the possibility of further heavy precipitation, with conditions posing a risk to roads, homes and other infrastructure.

AEMET's forecasts indicated the potential for significant rainfall accumulations over short periods, increasing the danger of flash flooding and overflowing torrents.

Authorities said the suspension would also help avoid unnecessary journeys that could complicate the work of emergency services responding to incidents across the islands.

The decision was based on weather forecasts and emergency recommendations rather than a requirement for every school to have suffered direct damage.

Emergency Services Urge Continued Caution

The school closures came amid a wider emergency response to Storm Adam, which had already caused flooding and transport disruption in Ibiza and Formentera.

Residents were urged to follow official communications, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from flooded roads, torrents and other areas at risk of rapidly rising water.

The authorities also stressed the importance of checking updates from the Balearic Government, AEMET and the emergency services as conditions developed.

Where Families Can Check for Updates

Families should consult their schools' communications through GESTIB and the official channels of the Balearic Government for any changes to educational arrangements.

The suspension announced on Sunday applies specifically to Monday, 19 October 2026. Any decision concerning subsequent school days would require a further official announcement.

The regional government said it would continue monitoring the weather situation in coordination with AEMET and emergency services, with public safety remaining the priority as Storm Adam affected the islands.
