Storm Adam Causes 27 Flight Cancellations and 16 Diversions at Ibiza Airport

October 19, 2026

Storm Adam caused 27 flight cancellations and 16 diversions at Ibiza Airport by 19:00 on Sunday, 18 October 2026, after torrential rainfall forced two temporary suspensions of airport operations. The disruption affected domestic and international connections, while flooding also caused problems inside the terminal and around airport access and parking facilities.

The figures were provided by airport operator Aena to the EFE news agency. The airport temporarily suspended operations for safety reasons and to allow teams to remove accumulated water from operational areas.

Although flights resumed after the interruptions, the disruption continued throughout the day as airlines dealt with cancellations, diversions and delays.

Ibiza Airport Suspends Operations Twice

The first suspension took place between 10:00 and 11:00 on Sunday morning, when intense rainfall made it necessary to halt airport operations.

Flights subsequently resumed, but operations were suspended again between 11:15 and 12:15 while teams worked to remove accumulated water from several areas of the airfield.

During the second interruption, Aena recorded 16 diverted flights and five cancellations. By 19:00, the cumulative figures for the day had risen to 27 cancellations and 16 diversions.

The distinction between the two sets of figures is important: the five cancellations refer to the second period of suspended operations, while the total of 27 cancellations covers the wider disruption recorded by early Sunday evening.

Flooding Also Affects the Airport Terminal

The storm caused problems beyond the airfield, with water affecting several areas inside and outside the terminal building.

The airport's parking facilities were also disrupted. Access to the P1 car park was temporarily closed after a canopy fell, while one of the two access lanes to the Express car park was taken out of service.

By the time of the evening update, the P1 car park had reopened, and one of the two Express car park access lanes remained operational.

The incidents added to the difficulties experienced by passengers during a day of severe weather across Ibiza and Formentera.

Flights Diverted to Alternative Airports

The operational interruptions affected connections to Ibiza from destinations in Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Flights unable to land on the island were diverted to alternative airports, disrupting passengers' travel plans and creating knock-on effects for subsequent services.

The full impact varied by flight, with some services cancelled and others diverted. Passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines before travelling to the airport, as flight schedules could change in response to weather conditions and operational recovery.

Aena's figures provide a snapshot of the disruption recorded by 19:00 on Sunday rather than a final assessment of every delay or subsequent schedule change.

Weather Warnings Continue Into Monday

The disruption occurred as Storm Adam brought exceptionally heavy rainfall to the Pitiusas. Aena's operational update coincided with continued weather warnings for Ibiza and Formentera.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) was forecasting further unsettled conditions for Monday, 19 October, with an orange rain warning expected to remain in force in the Pitiusas.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to take precautions, avoid flooded roads and follow official emergency communications.

For passengers travelling through Ibiza Airport, the effects of Sunday's storm could continue to be felt through schedule changes and knock-on delays. Checking flight status directly with the airline remains the most reliable way to confirm whether a particular service is operating as planned.
