Schools Reopen Across Ibiza and Formentera on Tuesday as Storm Adam Conditions Improve

October 20, 2026

Schools across Ibiza and Formentera are scheduled to resume normal classes on Tuesday, 20 October, after the Balearic Government suspended educational activities on Monday because of Storm Adam and the risk of flooding.

The decision follows an improvement in the weather situation and a gradual recovery of essential services after days of heavy rainfall, flooding and disruption across the Pitiusas.

The Government confirmed the return to classrooms on Monday, asking families, students and school staff to continue monitoring communications from their educational centres and official channels for any further updates.

Classes Resume After Monday's Suspension

The suspension on Monday, 19 October, affected educational centres across Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca. It was introduced as a precaution to reduce unnecessary journeys and protect students, staff and families while heavy rainfall and the risk of flooding threatened roads and public infrastructure.

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), which had also suspended in-person teaching and administrative activities on its campuses in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera on Monday, is also scheduled to resume academic activity on Tuesday.

Families are encouraged to check messages from their individual schools and the GESTIB platform for any specific instructions or changes affecting their centre.

Yellow Weather Warnings Remain in Place

Although the situation has improved, the return to school does not mean that all weather risks have disappeared.

AEMET's yellow warning for rain was expected to remain in place in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera until 12:00 on Tuesday. Further showers were possible overnight and into Tuesday morning, with locally heavy rainfall still a concern.

The authorities continue to urge residents to exercise caution, particularly when travelling through areas affected by flooding or where water may have accumulated during the storm.

Emergency Teams Continue Recovery Work

Emergency services are continuing to address the consequences of Storm Adam across the Balearic Islands.

The Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been helping remove water from flooded streets, parking areas and garages in Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca. Although the most serious incidents have been addressed and the emergency severity level in the Pitiusas has been reduced, further work remains to restore affected infrastructure and clear outstanding hazards.

Areas including Playa d'en Bossa, Santa Eulària and northern Sant Joan still required attention following the heavy rainfall.

Authorities are continuing to monitor conditions and have urged residents to follow official updates rather than assume that all affected areas are safe.

Families Urged to Follow Official School Communications

The reopening announcement follows confusion earlier on Monday, when a false notice circulated online claiming that schools would also be closed on Tuesday. The Government subsequently confirmed that educational activities would resume.

Families should rely on official Government announcements, their school's communications and GESTIB for any further changes.

With classes returning and recovery operations continuing, the islands are beginning to move towards normality after Storm Adam, while remaining alert to the possibility of further rainfall.
