Ibiza and Formentera Get 290 Teaching Posts as Balearic Exams Set for 17 April 2027

October 22, 2026

Ibiza and Formentera will have a combined 290 teaching posts available in the Balearic Islands’ 2027 public teaching examinations, with the tests scheduled for 17 April 2027.

The regional Department of Education and Universities announced 474 posts across the archipelago on Thursday, 22 October 2026. Although the overall number is lower than in the previous call, the allocation for the Pitiusas has increased significantly.

Ibiza will receive 257 posts, 73 more than in the previous call, while Formentera will have 33, an increase of 15. Together, the two islands account for more than 61% of the announced total.

Ibiza has the largest island allocation

The distribution gives Ibiza the largest number of posts in the Balearic Islands, ahead of Mallorca, which will have 134. Menorca has been allocated 50, while Formentera will have 33.

The figures represent a notable increase for the Pitiusas compared with the 2026 call, when Ibiza had 184 posts and Formentera 18.

The increase comes despite a reduction in the overall regional offer. The 2026 call included 630 teaching posts, meaning the 2027 total of 474 is 156 lower.

Education Minister Antoni Vera said announcing the examination date around six months in advance should give candidates more certainty and time to prepare.

Examinations scheduled for 17 April 2027

The competitive examinations are scheduled to take place on 17 April 2027.

The advance announcement is intended to help candidates organise their preparation and give the education administration greater scope to plan staffing procedures.

The timing also forms part of the department’s wider effort to coordinate recruitment with the allocation of teaching posts and the appointment of substitute teachers. These processes are important for ensuring that schools have staff in place for the start of the academic year.

The announced date is the date for the examinations; candidates should consult the formal call and subsequent official notices for the applicable application deadlines, requirements and examination arrangements.

What teaching posts are included?

The 474 posts cover six teaching bodies:

  • Secondary-school teachers: 275 posts.

  • Primary-school teachers: 141 posts.

  • Specialist vocational-training teachers: 45 posts.

  • Official language schools: three posts.

  • Music and performing arts: nine posts.

  • Plastic arts and design: one post.

Secondary education accounts for the largest share of the offer, followed by primary education.

The department has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of the specific subjects to be offered on Ibiza and Formentera or the allocation of each teaching body’s posts between the two islands.

Candidates should therefore avoid assuming that a particular subject or specialisation will be available on their preferred island until the detailed call is published.

A larger offer for the Pitiusas despite fewer posts overall

The 2027 announcement presents a mixed picture for the regional education system. The total number of posts is lower than in 2026, but Ibiza and Formentera will receive more positions combined.

For Ibiza, the allocation rises from 184 to 257. Formentera increases from 18 to 33. The combined total for the two islands therefore rises from 202 to 290.

The final opportunities available to individual candidates will depend on the detailed requirements, specialisations and selection rules set out in the official call.

For prospective teachers in the Pitiusas, the next step is to follow the publication of the full terms, which will clarify the specialities, eligibility criteria and application procedure for the examinations in April 2027.
