Storm Adam Hoax: Balearic Government Confirms Work Has Not Been Generally Suspended on Monday

October 18, 2026

The Balearic Government has denied a false message circulating on social media and WhatsApp claiming that the working day had been suspended across Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera on Monday, 19 October, because of Storm Adam.

The misleading notice imitated an official emergency communication and added a claim that had not been announced by the authorities. The actual measure confirmed by the Govern was the suspension of educational activities in the three islands due to the risk of torrential rain and flooding.

The government urged the public to check official communications before sharing information about emergency measures.

What the Official Announcement Actually Says

On Sunday, 18 October, the Balearic Government announced that in-person classes and educational activities would be suspended on Monday in all educational centres in Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The decision followed recommendations from the Directorate General of Emergencies and Interior, based on forecasts from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and the risk of flooding associated with Storm Adam.

The official announcement did not declare a general suspension of work across the islands.

The false message circulated using a format similar to the genuine emergency notice, making it appear that the authorities had also cancelled the working day. The Govern publicly clarified that this additional claim was untrue.

Does the Decision Affect Everyone Who Has to Work?

No general suspension of the working day was announced for all employees. However, separate workplace arrangements were introduced for certain public employees.

The regional government authorised remote working for eligible employees of the Balearic administration whose duties could be carried out from home. Staff unable to work remotely were instructed to follow the directions of their managers, while essential services and emergency operations were to continue.

Authorities also advised people to avoid unnecessary journeys and follow safety recommendations while the severe weather situation continued.

Employees should therefore distinguish between the absence of a general suspension and the specific instructions that may apply to their workplace, public administration or individual circumstances.

Why the False Message Caused Confusion

The hoax appeared as the authorities were issuing several urgent communications about Storm Adam, including school closures and warnings about dangerous weather conditions.

The similarity between the false notice and the genuine emergency announcement made the claim potentially confusing, particularly when shared without its original context.

The incident highlights the importance of checking the source of messages about school closures, work arrangements and emergency restrictions before forwarding them to other people.

Where to Check Official Updates

Residents of Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca should consult official communications from the Balearic Government, Emergency Services 112 and AEMET for the latest information about weather alerts, restrictions and safety recommendations.

The situation may change as weather conditions develop, so the public should rely on updated official announcements rather than screenshots or forwarded messages whose authenticity cannot be established.

As of the government's clarification on Sunday, 18 October, schools were suspended for Monday, but there was no general cancellation of the working day across the affected islands.
