Eivissa en Bici Launches in Ibiza to Demand a Connected and Safer Island-Wide Cycling Network

October 20, 2026

A new cycling association has been launched in Ibiza with a clear objective: to make travelling by bicycle safer, easier and more practical by connecting the island’s existing cycle routes.

Eivissa en Bici was presented on Monday, 19 October, as a non-profit organisation seeking to promote sustainable and healthy mobility and encourage alternatives to motorised transport. The group wants local authorities to develop a continuous network of cycle lanes linking Ibiza’s main urban areas and everyday destinations.

The association grew out of the citizen platform A Vila en Bici, which has spent recent years highlighting cyclists’ needs on social media and bringing their concerns to the attention of public administrations. By formally establishing an association, its members hope to strengthen their voice and create a more structured dialogue with institutions.

Ibiza Has 42.25 Kilometres of Cycling Routes, but Connections Remain a Challenge

According to Eivissa en Bici’s assessment, Ibiza has 42.25 kilometres of cycling infrastructure. However, the association argues that many sections remain disconnected, making it difficult to travel comfortably and safely between residential areas, town centres and other everyday destinations.

The figure is consistent with the 2025 cycling-network data published by IbizaPreservation earlier this year. That assessment also identified connectivity between separate sections as one of the island’s principal challenges for sustainable mobility.

Eivissa en Bici argues that adding individual stretches of cycle lane is not enough if they do not form a useful network. Its goal is to make cycling a realistic option for more daily journeys, rather than an activity limited to recreational routes or isolated areas.

Priority Links Between Ibiza Town and Nearby Communities

One of the association’s main priorities is improving connections between Ibiza Town and neighbouring communities, including:

  • Jesús

  • Puig d’en Valls

  • Can Escandell

  • Platja d’en Bossa

  • Sant Jordi

The group also wants better cycling connections between the main population centres around the Bay of Portmany and in the municipality of Santa Eulària.

Beyond urban cycle lanes, Eivissa en Bici proposes recovering existing paths and creating additional cycling routes through Ibiza’s countryside, giving residents more options for travelling around the island.

The association has called for cooperation with local councils and the Consell d’Eivissa to identify practical solutions and build a network that responds to the needs of people who cycle for transport, work, education and leisure.

Cycling Events, Safety Workshops and a Map of Dangerous Locations

Alongside its infrastructure demands, Eivissa en Bici is preparing activities intended to encourage more people to use bicycles and improve road safety.

Its planned initiatives include cycling outings, road-safety education workshops, conferences and a collaborative map of dangerous locations for cyclists.

The proposed map would allow people to identify and document places they consider particularly problematic when travelling by bicycle. This could help the association organise its proposals and communicate specific concerns to the relevant authorities.

The group also wants to work with other associations, businesses and institutions that share its interest in sustainable transport and safer public spaces.

Who Is Behind Eivissa en Bici?

The association’s founding board consists of 11 members.

Pedro Guasch is president, Héctor Bonet serves as vice-president, María del Mar López Alcaraz is secretary, and Rafael Tur is treasurer.

The other board members are Miriam Arandes, Lluís Lliteras, José Manuel Soriano, Joan Costa, Elena Roig, Xavier Rosselló and Daniel Azagra.

The association is open to new members and aims to build a wider community of people and organisations interested in improving cycling conditions across Ibiza.

A Call for Safer, More Connected Mobility

Eivissa en Bici’s launch adds an organised voice to the debate over how residents move around the island and how public space is shared between cyclists, pedestrians and motor vehicles.

Its central demand is for continuity: cycle routes that connect with one another and reach the places people need to go.

The association has not announced an approved island-wide construction programme. Instead, it aims to work with public administrations, propose improvements and encourage practical steps towards a safer, more connected cycling network.

For the group, the ambition is to make cycling a more accessible everyday choice across Ibiza, supported by infrastructure that prioritises safety, health and coexistence in public spaces.
