Ibiza Continues Flood Recovery as Water Pumped From Car Parks Accumulates on City Streets

October 22, 2026

Ibiza Town continued working to recover from the flooding caused by DANA Adam on 21 October, as emergency crews removed water from inundated car parks and streets. Footage shared with local media showed water accumulating on Carrer d'Abad i Lasierra, where a resident raised concerns that the street drainage system was struggling to absorb water being pumped out of flooded parking areas.

Although the heaviest rainfall had eased, the consequences of the storm remained visible across the municipality. Emergency teams were continuing to remove standing water from affected locations as the island worked towards normality.

Resident Raises Concerns Over Water Pumped Into the Street

The situation on Carrer d'Abad i Lasierra was highlighted by a local resident who said water extracted from flooded car parks was being discharged onto public roads.

In a message sent to local media, she described how the water was accumulating because the drains were unable to carry it away quickly enough.

Her account raises a practical challenge during flood recovery: removing water from one flooded location can leave standing water elsewhere if the receiving drainage network cannot handle the additional flow.

However, the precise cause of the accumulation on this street has not been established. It remains unclear whether the drainage difficulties resulted from a temporary blockage, the capacity of the network being exceeded or another factor.

Emergency Crews Continue Removing Floodwater

The clean-up operation continued after intense rainfall affected Ibiza and other parts of the Pityusic Islands.

On 20 October, the Balearic Government confirmed that the Military Emergency Unit (UME) was working to extract water from flooded areas in Ibiza. Its teams had also been deployed to other affected locations, including Platja d'en Bossa and Es Canar in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu.

At Es Canar, particular attention was being given to a flooded unpaved car park where vehicles had been left surrounded by accumulated water.

The Government also reported damage at Es Figueral beach, where the force of water flowing down a torrent had carried sand towards the sea.

These interventions formed part of the wider effort to remove floodwater, assess damage and restore affected roads and facilities.

Thirteen Flood-Related Incidents Remained Open

According to the Balearic Government's update of 20 October, the storm episode had generated 410 incidents across the Balearic Islands, recorded and managed by the 112 emergency coordination service.

Of these, 13 remained open, all in Ibiza and Formentera. They involved flooding in buildings, commercial premises and public areas.

The Government maintained the Inunbal flood emergency plan at operational level 2 in Ibiza and Formentera while continuing to assess the situation. Although meteorological conditions were improving, authorities warned that the emergency response was not yet complete.

Emergency personnel involved in the operations included the UME, Ibiza and Formentera firefighters, IBANAT and local Civil Protection services.

Drainage Capacity Remains an Open Question

The water accumulating on Carrer d'Abad i Lasierra illustrates one of the difficulties that can arise when large quantities of floodwater must be removed from urban areas.

Pumping water away from underground car parks and other flooded spaces is an important part of the recovery process. However, where that water is discharged into streets, the capacity of the receiving drainage system can affect how quickly it is removed from the area.

In this case, the available reporting does not establish whether the drainage system was blocked, overwhelmed by the volume of water or affected by another problem. Further technical assessment would be needed to determine the cause.

As Ibiza continues recovering from DANA Adam, the immediate priority remains clearing flooded areas and addressing the damage left by the storm. Establishing why water accumulated at particular locations will be important for determining whether additional drainage or flood-management measures are required.
