Ibiza’s Jonás Souto Becomes World Champion with Spain in Bali

6 October 2026

Ibiza's Jonás Souto has become a world champion after Spain won the 2026 ISAK Billiard WPA Men's Doubles 10-Ball World Championship in Bali, Indonesia.

The Spanish team defeated the Philippines 3-2 in the final on October 5, completing an impressive run through the tournament and securing the world title.

Souto, who represents Club Billar Eivissa-Ilusions Pool, was part of Spain's three-player squad alongside David Alcaide and Francisco Sánchez-Ruiz.

Spain Wins a Dramatic Final

The final against the Philippines went down to the wire.

Spain took the opening set 4-1, but the Philippine pair of Carlo Biado and Albert James "AJ" Manas responded by winning the next two sets, 4-0 and 4-3.

Spain then fought back, winning the fourth set 4-1 before taking the decisive fifth set 4-2 to secure the world championship.

The title was ultimately won at the table by David Alcaide and Francisco Sánchez-Ruiz, who were Spain's pair in the final.

Souto did not play in the final, having been part of the rotation used by the Spanish team throughout the tournament.

Souto Played a Key Role Earlier in the Tournament

Souto did play important matches during Spain's route to the final.

In the opening round, Souto and Sánchez-Ruiz defeated Great Britain's Jayson Shaw and Darren Appleton 2-1.

Spain then defeated Canada 2-0 before Souto returned to the lineup in the winners' qualification round.

He and Sánchez-Ruiz subsequently faced the United States pairing of Shane van Boening and Skyler Woodward, losing 0-2.

Spain continued its run through the elimination side of the draw, defeating Vietnam 2-1 before overcoming Chinese Taipei 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

The Spanish team then defeated Poland in the semi-finals, setting up the final against the Philippines.

A Second World Championship Medal

The victory gives Souto his second World Championship medal.

His first came in 2019, when he became world junior champion in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The 2026 title is his first world championship success at senior level, although it is important to describe it specifically as a men's doubles team title, rather than an individual world championship.

The official tournament results list Spain as champions, with Alcaide and Sánchez-Ruiz winning the final against the Philippines. Poland and Indonesia took the bronze medals.

A Standout 2026 Season

The world title adds another major achievement to what has already been a highly successful 2026 season for Souto.

Earlier in the year, he helped Spain win the European team championship and also reached the podium at the UK Open, one of the major events on the World Nineball Tour.

At the Spanish Championships, he collected three gold medals and one silver.

The world championship in Bali now provides another major highlight.

“The Most Important Medal of My Career”

Speaking from Bali after the victory, Souto described the world championship medal as the most important of his career because it was achieved as part of a team.

He also addressed the fact that he did not play the final, explaining that Spain had rotated its players throughout the tournament and that he was happy to contribute to the team both on and off the table.

For Souto, the achievement also carries a strong connection to his home island.

He said he was particularly happy that Ibiza could be placed in the international spotlight through a sport that receives less attention than many mainstream disciplines.

His next ambition is clear: after becoming world junior champion in 2019 and now winning the senior world title with Spain in the men's doubles competition, he hopes the opportunity will eventually come to fight for an individual world championship.

For now, however, Jonás Souto can celebrate another world title, this time as part of the Spanish team that conquered the world stage in Bali.
