Unai Gómez Wins Gold for Club Judo Sant Jordi at Spanish Judo Super Cup in Santander

5 October 2026

Club Judo Sant Jordi returned from Santander with a gold medal and a fifth-place finish after a strong performance at the VI Supercopa de España Infantil, Cadete y Alevín, held at the Palacio de Deportes on October 3 and 4.

The Santander event brought together around 1,500 young judokas from 17 autonomous communities, alongside international delegations. The competition was one of the major events on the Spanish youth judo calendar, with the cadet competition taking place on Saturday and the infant competition on Sunday.

Unai Gómez Takes Gold in the -66 kg Cadet Category

The standout result for the Ibiza club came from Unai Gómez, who won the cadet -66 kg category and claimed the gold medal.

Gómez progressed through a demanding draw, defeating Valencia's Pablo Ots in the opening round before overcoming Catalonia's Giorgi Lobjanize in the round of 16.

He continued his run with a quarter-final victory over Madrid's Álvaro Martín and then defeated fellow Madrid judoka Asier San Vicente in the semi-final.

In the final, Gómez defeated Valencia's Hugo Álvarez to finish top of his section and secure the gold medal.

Superfinal Against Eneko Azpeitia

After winning his category, Gómez also competed in the -66 kg superfinal against Basque judoka Eneko Azpeitia.

The additional contest determined which of the two judokas would receive the maximum points associated with the event for the Spanish Cup national ranking.

Gómez did not win the superfinal, but that did not change his gold-medal result in the -66 kg category. His performance nevertheless represented a significant result against a strong national field.

The Spanish federation's 2026-27 calendar confirms Santander as a Super Cup venue for the cadet competition on October 3 and for the infant competition on October 4.

Strong Performances Across the Sant Jordi Team

The Ibiza club travelled to Santander with six athletes, four competing in the cadet category and two in the infant category, accompanied by a coach.

María García competed in the cadet -57 kg category. After defeating Galicia's Emma Fernández in her opening bout, she lost to Madrid's Ariadne Pavón and was unable to enter the repechage.

Eric Ferrer, competing in cadet -50 kg, defeated Navarra's Adam Ortega before losing in the round of 16 to Madrid's Alejandro Carpio. His opponent's subsequent result meant Ferrer did not enter the repechage.

In cadet -73 kg, Jordi Torres opened with a victory over Madrid's Antonio Matarranz before being eliminated by Castile and León's Aiur Betelu.

Carla Pérez Finishes Fifth

The infant competition brought another notable result for Club Judo Sant Jordi through Carla Pérez in the -57 kg category.

Pérez defeated La Rioja's Adriana Mayo in the round of 16 and then overcame Valeria Valentina Torres in the quarter-final to reach the semi-finals.

She lost her semi-final to Navarra's Leía Anaut, who went on to win the competition.

Pérez then competed for bronze but was narrowly defeated by Galicia's Mara Costa, leaving her in fifth place. The result was particularly notable because it represented her second fifth-place finish in the first two national competitions of the season.

Elena Menéndez, competing at -44 kg, reached the repechage after losing in the round of 16. She subsequently recorded two victories, against Asturias' Jimena Camisella and France's Louna Nzombo, before being eliminated in the third repechage round by Madrid's María Mata.

A Gold and a Fifth Place for Ibiza

Club Judo Sant Jordi therefore leaves Santander with one gold medal and one fifth-place finish from its six-athlete delegation.

For Unai Gómez, the victory in the cadet -66 kg category represents another important result on the national circuit. For Carla Pérez, the fifth-place finish provides another strong result at national level.

The Santander weekend also gave the club's younger judokas valuable experience against competitors from across Spain and internationally, with several athletes competing in new categories this season.

The Spanish federation lists further Super Cup and Spanish Cup events throughout the remainder of the 2026-27 calendar, giving the Sant Jordi judokas further opportunities to build on their performances in Santander.
