S’Arenal Beach in San Antonio Reopens for Swimming After Wastewater Spill

3 October 2026

S’Arenal beach in San Antonio has reopened for swimming after the latest water-quality analyses confirmed that the bathing water has returned to the required standards.

The Town Hall of Sant Antoni de Portmany received the latest test results on Friday, 2 October 2026. The results showed that the relevant water-quality indicators were within the established limits, allowing the municipality to restore the green flag at the beach.

Swimming is now permitted normally at s’Arenal.

Beach Had Been Closed Since 20 September

The beach had been closed to bathing since 20 September, when the municipality introduced a precautionary closure after a wastewater spill reached the bathing area.

According to the municipality, the incident was caused by the failure of a pumping station in the sanitation network. A piece of iron became lodged in the pump, causing the malfunction.

The pump was repaired on the same day and cleaning and disinfection work was carried out.

However, subsequent water analyses continued to detect indicators of contamination in the bathing area.

For that reason, the Town Hall kept the beach closed even after the mechanical problem had been repaired, waiting until laboratory results confirmed that the required water-quality parameters had been restored.

Latest Tests Confirm Water Is Suitable for Bathing

The latest analyses have now confirmed that the water meets the required conditions.

The green flag has consequently been restored and the bathing area has reopened.

The Balearic Islands' 2026 bathing-water monitoring programme includes microbiological testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, with established thresholds determining whether water is suitable for bathing.

The municipality has stressed that the closure was maintained as a precaution until the analytical results provided the necessary confirmation that bathing could safely resume.

A 12-Day Closure

The reopening comes 12 days after the original closure on 20 September.

The episode demonstrates why bathing restrictions can remain in place after the immediate source of a wastewater incident has been repaired. In this case, the pump was fixed on the day of the spill, but the beach remained closed while subsequent water testing continued to detect contamination indicators.

With the latest results now within the required limits, s’Arenal has returned to normal bathing conditions.

For residents and visitors in San Antonio, the practical update is straightforward: the green flag is back and swimming is permitted at s’Arenal.
