Sant Josep Police Step Up Checks Against Driver Distractions in Ibiza

6 October 2026

The Policía Local de Sant Josep is joining a nationwide campaign aimed at reducing driver distractions, with increased traffic controls taking place across the municipality from October 5 to 11.

The campaign, coordinated by Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), focuses on behaviours that can divert a driver's attention from the road, with particular emphasis on mobile-phone use.

The local police have announced their participation with the message “Cuando conduzcas, conduce”, reminding motorists that driving requires their full attention.

Mobile Phones Remain a Major Distraction

The DGT identifies distraction as one of the most significant factors contributing to road crashes in Spain.

According to the latest DGT figures, distraction was present in 21% of traffic crashes in 2025 and was the most common concurrent factor in fatal crashes, appearing in 32% of fatal crashes, involving 444 cases.

The figures include different forms of distraction, including the use of mobile phones, interaction with passengers, eating and adjusting vehicle systems.

Increased Controls in Sant Josep

During the campaign, Policía Local de Sant Josep officers will increase surveillance on roads throughout the municipality.

The objective is to identify behaviours that can compromise road safety and reinforce compliance with traffic regulations.

The campaign covers both urban and interurban roads, with local police forces joining the wider DGT operation alongside the Guardia Civil Traffic Group and other participating police forces around Spain.

Mobile Phone Use Under the Spotlight

The DGT continues to identify mobile-phone use as one of the most common forms of driver distraction.

Using a phone while driving can involve several simultaneous forms of distraction, including visual, manual and cognitive distraction.

The DGT says that even actions that appear brief can take a driver's attention away from the road and increase reaction times.

During the previous national distraction campaign in October 2025, 47.4% of the reported offences were related to improper mobile-phone use while driving.

The new campaign will again focus on detecting this and other forms of distracted driving.

The Message: Stay Focused

The campaign is being carried out from Monday, October 5 through Sunday, October 11, and forms part of the wider European Operation Focus on the Road initiative coordinated by RoadPol, the European Roads Policing Network.

The DGT is also working with ASPAYM, the National Federation of People with Spinal Cord Injuries and Other Physical Disabilities. Volunteers will accompany traffic officers in participating provinces to help raise awareness of the consequences that serious road crashes can have.

For drivers in Sant Josep, the message from local police is straightforward: distractions can wait, but the road demands attention.

When you drive, drive.
