Jean Paul Gaultier Brings a Witchy 1980s Ibiza Influence to Its SS27 Collection

6 October 2026

Ibiza has once again found its way into the fashion world, this time inspiring the latest Jean Paul Gaultier collection presented during Paris Fashion Week.

For Spring/Summer 2027, creative director Duran Lantink looked to Dutch folklore, mythology and the Jean Paul Gaultier archive, while also drawing on what he described as a “folky, witchy 1980s Ibiza vibe”.

The collection, titled “Multidimensionality”, was presented at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris on October 5, 2026.

A Different Side of 1980s Ibiza

The Ibiza reference is not about reproducing a specific location or holiday aesthetic.

Instead, Lantink incorporated an atmosphere associated with the island's more bohemian and unconventional 1980s image into a collection otherwise strongly rooted in Dutch folklore.

Ruffles, embroidered bells, vintage-inspired pieces, graphic checks, tartans and floral prints helped create the folkloric mood. The combination was deliberately eclectic, bringing together traditional references with the rebellious spirit associated with Jean Paul Gaultier.

Bells were embroidered across jeans, skirts and coats, creating movement and sound as the models walked. An antique cape dating from around 1900 was also reworked in lightweight cotton.

Dutch Folklore Meets Gaultier

Lantink explored traditional Dutch garments and prints from the Jean Paul Gaultier archive, giving them a contemporary interpretation.

Checks, tartans and florals appeared throughout the collection, while tailoring became more architectural with forward-leaning shoulders, unusual lapels and sharply constructed silhouettes.

The collection also revisited recognisable Gaultier elements, including leather cone bras, while introducing unusual footwear, sculptural shapes and transformed versions of familiar garments.

The result was a deliberate mix of old and new, with folklore, utility clothing, archival references and experimental proportions appearing together.

A Collection Designed to Be Seen From Every Angle

The title “Multidimensionality” was also reflected in the way the show itself was staged.

Lantink wanted the clothing to be viewed from different perspectives rather than simply from the front. Mirrors were positioned throughout the Palais de Tokyo, allowing the audience to see the garments from multiple angles.

The designer explained that during fittings he is particularly interested in the three-quarter view because the designs are three-dimensional.

That idea carried through into the clothing, where unusual construction and altered proportions became especially visible as the models moved.

Ibiza's Continuing Fashion Influence

The reference to 1980s Ibiza is particularly interesting because the island has repeatedly been used by fashion and culture as a symbol of freedom, experimentation, bohemian style and nightlife.

In this case, Lantink's interpretation is not a literal recreation of Ibiza fashion from the decade. It is one element within a much broader visual language that includes Dutch folklore, Gaultier's archive and the designer's own interest in unexpected combinations.

For Ibiza, it is another example of the island's cultural image continuing to influence international creative industries decades after the period that helped establish its global reputation.
