The future Museu de Formentera has taken another step forward with the Consell Insular de Formentera preparing to put the rehabilitation of Can Ramon out to tender.

The rehabilitation project is already drafted, and the next stage will be the procurement of the works, according to Consell president Óscar Portas.

Can Ramon is one of three buildings that will form the planned museum network, meaning the latest development represents progress on one part of a larger project that is still some way from completion.

Can Ramon project ready for works tender

The rehabilitation and museography project for Can Ramon has already been completed.

The Consell now intends to tender the execution of the rehabilitation works, although no specific tender date has yet been announced beyond the indication that the process will begin shortly.

The building is intended to become one of the principal spaces of the future Museu de Formentera and will focus on the island's ethnographic heritage.

The planned content includes the existing ethnographic collection, with objects, tools, furniture and clothing illustrating everyday life and traditional productive activities in Formentera.

A project that has faced delays

The latest move follows several years of administrative and technical difficulties surrounding Can Ramon.

The original contract was formalised in 2022 and included two phases. The first covered the preparation of the rehabilitation, activity and museography projects, while the second covered the technical direction of the works and museography.

The first phase was completed and formally received on January 30, 2025. The second phase was never activated because the rehabilitation works and museography had not yet been put out to tender.

The project had also undergone several revisions during its preparation. A technical advisory body initially issued an unfavourable report in December 2023. A revised version was subsequently submitted, received a favourable report in September 2024 and was approved definitively in April 2025.

Existing contract is being brought to an end

In August 2026, the Consell's governing body began the process of ending the existing contract with the UTE responsible for the Can Ramon project by mutual agreement.

The first phase had already been completed and paid for, while the second had not begun. The legal assessment cited the fact that keeping the second phase within the existing contract was no longer considered necessary or convenient.

The process was not yet completely finalised at the time of the latest report, as the company still had to confirm its agreement.

The change means the execution of the rehabilitation works can be pursued through a new procurement process rather than waiting for the second phase of the original contract.

Can Ramon is one of three museum sites

The Museu de Formentera is planned as a three-site institution.

Can Ramon will focus on the island's ethnographic heritage and traditional agricultural culture.

Sa Senieta will address domestic life and the social and cultural aspects associated with the traditional home.

The third site will be a new building on Carrer de Sant Joan, next to the Fossar Vell, which is planned as the principal museum building and will house the main exhibition and archaeological collections.

The project has therefore been conceived as a museum distributed across several locations rather than a single standalone building.

Sa Senieta is progressing separately

Work on sa Senieta is being handled separately and involves the Govern de les Illes Balears.

The Balearic Government has previously provided funding for the preparation of the restoration and museum projects, while the Consell remains the owner of the historic property.

The building is a traditional Formentera house and is protected as a catalogued heritage property. The future museum plan assigns it a role focused on domestic culture and life on the island.

The current update indicates that the sa Senieta intervention is also progressing, with its project already in place.

Main museum building remains the biggest outstanding piece

The third and principal element of the museum is the new building planned for Carrer de Sant Joan.

The Balearic Government and the Consell reactivated the governing board of the Museu de Formentera Foundation in April 2026 after years of inactivity.

That meeting established the preparation of the main Sant Joan building as a priority and also highlighted the need for financial involvement from the Spanish Government.

The project for this central building still needs to advance before the complete museum can take shape.

Museum will not open when Can Ramon is finished alone

The latest announcement does not mean that the Museu de Formentera is about to open.

Portas has stated that the creation of the museum as a complete institution will have to wait until all three buildings are completed.

Until then, the island's existing ethnographic collection continues to be available in Sant Francesc.

This distinction is important because the rehabilitation of Can Ramon represents one stage of the project rather than its final completion.

A museum focused on Formentera's identity

The planned museum is intended to bring together the island's archaeological, historical, ethnographic and cultural heritage.

The three-site structure has been designed to allow different aspects of Formentera's history and traditional way of life to be presented in locations with their own architectural and cultural significance.

Can Ramon provides the setting for the ethnographic collection, while sa Senieta offers a second perspective centred on domestic life. The new Sant Joan building is planned to provide the principal exhibition and archaeological facilities.

A project years in the making

Plans for a dedicated Museu de Formentera have been developing for years, with Can Ramon and sa Senieta acquired or designated for museum use and the wider three-site concept established earlier in the process.

In April 2026, the reactivation of the museum foundation created a new administrative framework for advancing the project, with the institutions agreeing to concentrate on the main Sant Joan building while continuing work on the other two sites.

The latest Can Ramon announcement adds another practical step: moving from a completed rehabilitation project to the tendering of the actual works.

Another step towards the future Museu de Formentera

Formentera is therefore moving forward on several parts of the museum project at the same time, although the stages are progressing at different speeds.

Can Ramon now has a completed project and is expected to enter a new works tender process. Sa Senieta is progressing separately under the Balearic Government, while the main Sant Joan building still requires further project development.

The museum itself will only become a reality once the three sites are completed.

For now, the planned tender for Can Ramon marks another step in a project that has been in development for years and aims to create a permanent museum network dedicated to the cultural and historical heritage of Formentera.
