Spanish Army personnel will carry out day and night motorised patrols in five areas of northeast Mallorca from Monday, September 28, to Wednesday, September 30, as part of an operational deployment focused on presence, surveillance and deterrence.

The deployment will involve the Balearic Islands Tactical Sub-group, a unit belonging to the Philippines Battalion of the 47th Palma Infantry Regiment.

Five Mallorca Municipalities Included

The military patrols will take place in the municipalities of:

• Artà

• Llubí

• Manacor

• Sineu

• Santa Margalida

The unit will be commanded by a captain and will conduct motorised patrols during both daytime and nighttime.

Military personnel will also maintain contact with local authorities during the deployment, informing them of their presence and exchanging information of mutual interest.

An Operational Deployment, Not a Training Exercise

One important distinction is that the deployment is not being described by the military authorities as a training exercise or military manoeuvre.

Instead, it forms part of the Armed Forces' presence, surveillance and deterrence operations.

According to the information released by the Land Operations Command, these operations are intended to maintain surveillance of areas under national sovereignty, identify potential threats at an early stage and facilitate a response to a possible crisis.

The operations are directed by the Operations Command, which operates under Spain's Defence Staff.

Part of Wider Surveillance Operations

The Land Operations Command is responsible for planning, conducting and monitoring these land operations under the operational control of the Operations Command.

The Mallorca deployment follows another operation by the Balearic Islands Tactical Sub-group in August.

Between August 10 and 14, personnel carried out surveillance and deterrence duties in parts of the Serra de Tramuntana, including Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Deià, Valldemossa, Escorca and Fornalutx, during the period surrounding the August 12 solar eclipse.

What Residents Can Expect

The planned patrols mean military vehicles and personnel will be visible in the five municipalities during the three-day deployment, including at night.

The military has indicated that personnel will coordinate with municipal authorities during the operation.

There has been no indication in the information released that the deployment is connected to a specific incident or immediate threat in any of the five municipalities.

The stated purpose is part of the Armed Forces' wider presence, surveillance and deterrence duties.
