Balearic Parliament President Gabriel Le Senne received Germany’s new consul in the Balearic Islands, Angelika Saake, in Palma on Friday, September 25, during an official meeting highlighting the longstanding links between Germany and the archipelago.

Le Senne welcomed Saake to her new position and wished her success in her role. He also said the doors of the Balearic Parliament would always be open to the large German community living in the islands.

New German Consul in the Balearics

Angelika Saake took up her position as Germany’s consul in Palma in August 2026.

The German Consulate in Palma has jurisdiction across the Balearic Islands, covering Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Its work includes providing consular and legal assistance to German visitors and German nationals who live permanently in the islands, as well as supporting wider links between Germany and the Balearics.

Saake has a long diplomatic career. Before taking up the Palma post, she worked at German diplomatic missions and the Federal Foreign Office, including postings in Paris, Abuja, Lagos, Montreal, Pretoria, Doha, Singapore and Juba.

Parliament Highlights German Community

During the meeting, Le Senne expressed his appreciation for Saake’s visit and highlighted the importance of the German population in the Balearic Islands.

His message that the Parliament’s doors are “always open” was presented as a gesture of welcome towards German residents and the wider German community in the archipelago. It was not announced as a new bilateral agreement or formal institutional arrangement.

Germany has a longstanding connection with the Balearics, both through tourism and through German nationals who live permanently across the islands.

For Ibiza and Formentera, the German Consulate in Palma is the official German consular authority responsible for the islands.

Continued Links Between Germany and the Balearics

The meeting comes as Germany and the Balearic Islands continue to maintain close links through tourism, permanent residents and broader cultural and economic exchanges.

The German diplomatic representation in Palma describes strengthening relations between Germany and the Balearics as part of its work alongside its consular responsibilities.

Saake's appointment provides a new diplomatic representative for Germany in the islands, while the meeting with the president of the Balearic Parliament offered an opportunity to reinforce institutional contact.

No new agreement or specific policy measure was announced as a result of the meeting.
