A man from Newton Mearns has raised thousands of pounds for Beatson Cancer Charity through a fundraising challenge inspired by his wife's cancer diagnosis.

Calum Fraser organised the "Ride to Ibiza" challenge after his wife, Cherlyn, was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel and liver cancer.

The challenge was created around an Ibiza distance that has special meaning for the Fraser family, with Calum setting out to cycle the equivalent of the journey from Glasgow to Ibiza.

Rather than travelling the route by bicycle, the challenge used a static exercise bike to cover the equivalent distance of approximately 1,650 miles.

A Challenge Inspired by Family

Calum explained on the family's fundraising page that Ibiza holds special memories for the family and that they wanted to turn those memories into something positive.

The challenge was also intended to raise awareness and funds for Beatson Cancer Charity, which supports people affected by cancer across Scotland.

The fundraiser was supported by PureGym Silverburn and Silverburn Shopping Centre, which helped provide the setting and support for the challenge.

The aim was not simply to complete a demanding physical challenge, but to bring people together while supporting a charity that had become particularly important to the Fraser family.

Fundraising Reaches Thousands

The wider fundraising campaign has raised around £7,000, according to the local report.

The family's JustGiving page separately records £1,546.64 in online donations, plus £355 in Gift Aid, at the time of the latest information available on the page. The difference reflects the fact that the wider fundraising total and the online JustGiving balance are not necessarily the same figure.

The JustGiving page currently records 59 donations and identifies Beatson Cancer Charity as the beneficiary.

Supporting Beatson Cancer Charity

Beatson Cancer Charity supports people affected by cancer and provides practical care, wellbeing services and other support, while also funding specialist services, research and education.

The charity works closely with the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and Beatson Institute for Cancer Research.

Its fundraising programme includes individual challenges, sporting events and community fundraising, allowing supporters to create their own activities in aid of the charity.

For the Fraser family, the fundraiser has provided a way to give something back following the support they have experienced during Cherlyn's treatment.

Why Ibiza Was Chosen

The destination was not chosen at random.

Calum's fundraising page explains that Ibiza is a place that is particularly special to the family and holds important memories for them.

That connection inspired the idea of using the approximate distance between Glasgow and Ibiza as the basis for the challenge.

The resulting 1,650-mile target turned a familiar holiday destination into a significant physical challenge, completed on a static bike rather than through an actual journey between the two locations.

Turning a Personal Experience Into a Fundraiser

The Fraser family's campaign reflects a common approach to charitable fundraising: using a personal experience to create a challenge that can bring friends, family and the wider community together.

In this case, the Glasgow-to-Ibiza concept provided a clear target while also connecting the fundraiser to somewhere meaningful to the family.
