Ibiza-Born Composer Miquel À. Roig-Francolí to Receive Spanish Premiere of Five Songs at Can Ventosa

7 October 2026

Ibiza-born composer Miquel À. Roig-Francolí will return to his home island this Friday, October 9, for a special chamber music concert at Espai Cultural Can Ventosa, where one of his works will be performed in Spain for the first time.

The concert, titled “Sonates i Cançons: Música de Cambra de Miquel À. Roig-Francolí”, begins at 20:30 and is dedicated entirely to the composer’s music. Tickets are priced at €10 and are being sold through the Ibiza Town Hall’s website.

Three Works by an Ibiza-Born Composer

The programme brings together three works from Roig-Francolí’s career.

The evening will open with his Sonata for Cello and Piano, written in 1984. It will then continue with “Cinco canciones con los ojos cerrados”, a 2011 work for soprano and piano based on poems by Spanish poet Antonio Colinas.

The programme will conclude with “Canciones de luz y oscuridad”, written in 2011 for violin, cello and piano.

The three works have been performed and recorded internationally. Roig-Francolí’s music has reached major concert halls around the world, including the Carnegie Hall in New York, where a monographic concert dedicated to his work took place in 2013.

Spanish Premiere of “Cinco canciones con los ojos cerrados”

The highlight for Spanish audiences will be “Cinco canciones con los ojos cerrados”.

Although the work was composed in 2011 and received its premiere in Cincinnati in 2013, it has never previously been performed in Spain, according to the composer’s catalogue and the information released ahead of the Ibiza concert.

The work sets poems by Antonio Colinas, a Spanish poet with a longstanding connection to Ibiza and a personal friendship with Roig-Francolí.

For this performance, the songs will be performed by soprano Irantzu Bartolomé Bilbao and pianist María José Perete.

An International Career Rooted in Ibiza

Miquel À. Roig-Francolí was born in Ibiza in 1953 and has built an extensive international career as a composer, musicologist and educator.

He is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he has developed much of his academic career.

His music has been performed in countries including Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, Mexico, Italy, France, Colombia, Greece, Brazil, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. His works have also been presented by orchestras and ensembles including the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, RTVE ensembles, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Baleares and the Orquestra Ciutat d’Eivissa.

His honours include the Ramon Llull Prize from the Balearic Government in 2010, the American Prize in Composition in 2016 and the Gold Medal of the City of Ibiza in 2025.
